are several troubling facts about this situation. The class is from an elementary school, and though the scenario makes no mention of the age of the students the fact
that they are in elementary school indicates that they are under the age of 12 or so. It appears that there are not enough adults present to properly supervise
the number of children the teachers have taken to the lake. The scenario states that the teachers instructed the students not to go
in the water, yet later they led the students into the water to wade with them for a time. It appears that they are guilty of telling the students
one thing yet doing another, and leading the students to confusion over whether they should or should not go into the water. Certainly pushing the teacher into the water
was not an appropriate action, but the students may well have reasoned that since she already had been in the water once she would not be upset about going in
again. Rather than wasting time and energy being upset about sunglasses that can be replaced easily and shoes that can be washed, the
teacher needs to be more concerned about the possibility of legal entanglements arising from striking a student. Even though the physical contact was accidental, it was still physical contact
that is not permissible. If parents are overly sensitive and choose to press the matter, then the teacher - and the school - could be facing some unpleasant discussions
in the days ahead. The most glaring problem of the day is that the students appear not to have been adequately supervised.
