are many possible reasons for the increase, and perhaps just as many possible solutions and affects. In all likelihood it is nothing more than a symptom of the society and
the problems that seem to be on the rise in relationship to pressures of a modern world. On the other hand, one can also argue that the school violence is
nothing new, but the use of guns may be new. The following paper examines three different articles which examine the causes, affects, and possible solutions to the problem of school
shootings. School Shootings In one article, a "Testimony presented at the House Judiciary Committee Oversight Hearing to Examine Youth Culture and Violence on May 13, 1999" by Dewey
G. Cornell, it is noted that there were successes in communities that studies reveal was reducing crime among the youth. The article notes that such things as encouraging mentoring, teaching
how to resolve conflicts, and giving young people constructive and healthy activities was proving beneficial. However, at the same time the speaker indicates that there is still a serious problem
with violence in the schools, indicating that the sensationalist approach through the media may well be contributing to further events. The author notes, "Although I am concerned about the
effects of sensational and exploitive news coverage of traumatized victims and terrified parents, these shootings deserve our attention because they are symptomatic of more pervasive problems in our youth culture"
(Cornell, 1999). They indicate that in the nation there have been hit lists drawn up by youth, bomb threats, weapon possession and many other problems and that although many have
