II. SCHOOL SAFETY ISSUES AND CHALLENGES The fairly recent phenomenon of school-aged kids killing their classmates and teachers for nothing more than the thrill of the act has parents and administrators up in arms. Out from all the bloodshed and terror of such despicable crimes comes the most obvious of questions: Why are kids killing each other? One of the most logical deductions is that of the new-fangled child rearing practices that have developed within the past two decades. Latchkey kids, single- and no-parent families, emotionally absent parents, working parents -- all these situations contribute to the lack of a childs moral and ethical education. If there is no role model -- no basis of right versus wrong -- the child has no guidance as to what is acceptable social behavior. To merely entertain the idea of taking another persons life, however, would seem an imbalance from within. Even if the young person understands that killing is not acceptable behavior, a childhood without positive attention and reinforcement -- where all that supports the his ego is a constant rash of negativity and rejection -- it is prudent to suggest that the child may use murder to be noticed.
