While some schools employ the limited protection of, for example, metal detection devices, others are utilizing the benefits of School Resource Officers (SROs), who occupy three specific and very important roles pertaining to law enforcement, counseling and teaching. The driving force behind implementing such a program is for law enforcement to have a hands-on involvement in structuring and educating students' perspectives of civilized behavior. is truly necessary in todays academic environment is immediately discounted with the following statistics: "Throughout the United States each year over 200,000 violent crimes occur on school property.
Each year 150,000 students stay home because they are sick of violence and afraid they might be stabbed, shot, or beaten. Every day in the U.S. 60 teachers are
assaulted and 160 are threatened. It is estimated that between 100,000 and 135,000 guns are brought to school each day. During the 1992-93 school year, 91% of urban
schools, 81% of suburban schools, and 69% of rural schools identified student vs. student assaults as the leading school related violent act" (Smith, 2003). II. DEFINING AN SRO SROs
have a variety of tasks to accomplish, with a typical days activities including foot patrol and site inspection (50%), counseling (30%) and educating (20%). So serious is the nature
of this high exposure to law enforcement that nearly all SRO pack a weapon while in the mode of school protection; similarly, more than half wear their uniforms in order
to instill a sense of authority and control by sight alone (Center for the Prevention of School Violence, 2003). The counseling aspect of SRO duties provides students with the opportunity
