for almost every student, and yet its something they face in nearly every humanities class they ever take. Instead of obsessing about it, though, there are things a student can
do to make it a fun experience for himself and his audience. If a student were to consider those techniques, he might express himself as follows. We were given an
assignment to prepare oral books reports for an English class, and I panicked. I really hate getting up in front of people because Im always afraid Im going to do
something stupid and embarrass myself. But a friend of mine said shed picked up some tips on public speaking, and why didnt I try them? So I said sure, why
not-I had nothing to lose. The first thing she said was so simple it amazes me I hadnt thought of it; maybe its that forest and trees thing. She asked
if the book was assigned and I said no, we could pick what we liked. Then, she said, pick a book you love, or one you think youre going to
love, something that gets you all fired up about it. That way, youll be talking about something that excites you, and when they sense how enthusiastic you are about the
book, your classmates will respond positively. Then, she said, dont cheat! Read the book carefully and completely, and pick out your favorite parts. Sometimes an author grabs you so much
