Hall 8/2010 Please Introduction The current literature relates a number of concepts and methods, including case studies, that can be used for addressing the issue of school leadership and the administrative processes and theories involved. The development of management perspectives and the integration of leadership models have become essential to addressing the needs of a changing learner population. Literature Review Johnson and Uline (2005) maintain that for the past quarter century, researchers have assessed the imperative role that leadership plays in creating effective schools, school districts and educational cultures. In the era of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and educational reform, schools in the United States have focused on efforts to close achievement gaps through the introduction of effective leaders who possess the "knowledge, dispositions and skills to assume these critical roles" (Johnson and Uline, 2005, p. 45). Johnson and Uline (2005) take a retrospective look at over 25 years of literature, examining the factors that lead to high achievement and academic success in studies of school culture, management and leadership. These researchers sited a variety of studies going back as far as the late 1970s that noted the correlation between effective leadership and the closing of achievement gaps.
