communication will build relationships, ineffective communication will destroy relationships or preclude a positive relationship from being developed. The school guidance counselor needs to be an especially good listener. Active listening
is one of the greatest communication skills one can possess. Active listening pays attention to the emotions, to the feelings behind the words that are not being verbally stated (Gillam,
n.d.; Sewell, 2004). The listener pays complete attention to what the speaker is both saying and feeling (Gillam, n.d.; Sewell, 2004). When the parent is talking, for instance, the
counselor would not interrupt, correct anything the parent is saying and is certainly not thinking about how to respond to the parent when they stop talking (Sewell, 2004). The purpose
of active listening is to gain an understanding of what the other person is feeling (Gillam, n.d.). What is this parent really saying and what feelings underlie the spoken message?
This is the question to be asking. The counselor would be alert to nonverbal cues, considering the tone of voice, body posture, facial expressions - these are all cues
that will help the counselor gain insight into what the parent is thinking and feeling. There are several other listening skills that help when working with parents. Paraphrasing, for instance,
is another skill but it is the process of telling the speaker how I understood their message (Gillam, n.d.). The school guidance counselor would not parrot back the parents words
but rather say what they think the parent meant. Asking for more information through questions is important for clarification, to be sure the listener really understands the whole story (Gillam,
