Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) : The MBTI is a "self-reporting instrument," which is designed to identify which expressions for perception and judgement that individuals prefer (Hood and Johnson 210). It
encompasses four dimensions, the first being whether or not the client prefers extroversion versus introversion (E-I). Extroverts favor directing their energy toward the "outer world of people and things," where
introverts tend to focus their energy toward the "inner world of ideas (Hood and Johnson 210). The second dimension measures preference in regards to personal mode of perceiving and is
labeled "sensing-intuition" (S-N) (Hood and Johnson 210). Additionally, the MBTI evaluates thinking versus feeling and judging versus perceiving. The MBTI is utilized in a number of counseling situations and it
is attractive to many counselors because there are "no good or bad scores nor good or bad combinations of types" (Hood and Johnson 212). This "non-judgmental quality" makes it easier
for counselors to interpret results for clients, as the results simply inform both the client and the counselor about the individuals preferred orientation toward the world. This seems like a
good starting point for the school counselor in assessing a students situation, abilities and preferred learning style. The California Psychological Inventory (CPI) : The CPI was designed for use
with "relatively well-adjusted" individuals (Hood and Johnson 213). It measures "everyday characteristics," such as "soci-ability, tolerance, and responsibility" and its items address "typical behavior patterns and attitudes" (Hood and Johnson
214). The CPI has been demonstrated as effective in predicting "success in a number of educational and vocational areas," so, therefore, seems well-suited for the purposes of school counseling (Hood
