It would upset the very school systems that the liberals have worked for, for decades. The idea of public school, where no one has a choice, but where safeguards are implemented so every child gets the same education, is something that people do not want to let go of. There are two sides to the issue of course. While some believe that the present school systems merely need rehabilitation, others see them as dismal failures needing a complete transition. If money is poured into the existing system, everything will be fair. By allowing people to pick and choose, there is a fear that things will not be. The children with the more interested parents will get into better schools and the underachievers from dismal backgrounds will continue to receive inferior educations. While that may be true to an extent, there is an inherent admission that the present system is not working. There is also the idea that while things are supposed to be fair, the truth is that the better school districts are those that are supported by higher taxes from the wealthier districts. It is that simple. Yet, one has to look at the problem from a political point of view. Is the selection of schools another step toward democracy and free markets, or is it a way that public funds will be used for private interests? The answer depends on who is asked. Liberals will say that when the private sector becomes involved, profit will be the only motive and schools will suffer.
