following the popular sport as a means of relating the family dynamics that characterize this period during the protagonists life. In the opening paragraphs, the girl describes a typical
family setting. It is Saturday night and she and her father take their accustomed places in front of the television in anticipation of watching the game. Father and daughter are
"intent on the screen and each other," but her mother is engrossed in turning one of her own old dresses into a blouse for her daughter (Schoemperlen 84). As this
scenario suggests, from the beginning of the story, the mother in this family, Violet, is pictured as outside of the tightly knit group watching the hockey game. The narrator
relates that when her mothers friend Rita was visiting, Violet "at least played a watching the game" (Schoemperlen 85). However, it is clear that Violets interests lie elsewhere as she
always is preoccupied with one of her own hobbies. Rita, on the other hand, is very much a hockey fan and bonds with Ted, the narrators father, through this shared
interest. However, after the game, Rita would retire to the kitchen with Violet, while the narrator and her father played a few hands of penny-a-point poker. The narrator recalls
that her mother "had never really had a friend of her own before" and it is clear that the friendship means a great deal to both women (Schoemperlen 87). The
narrator relates how Ritas presence in the kitchen when she comes home from school aids the relationship between her and her mother. She says, "With Rita there, my mother could
