Categorizing schizophrenia can present a few difficulties. The first thing to recognize is that the popular usage of the word "schizophrenia" to suggest some condition akin to "multiple
personalities" is totally misguided and inappropriate in the extreme. In truth, schizophrenia is accurately categorized by the presence of five symptoms, two of which must be present in order to
justify a professional diagnosis (Hansell, 2004). The first two symptoms are the presence of delusions and hallucinations which in themselves are regarded as the two most common manifestations of psychosis
(Hansell, 2004). After that, instances of disorganized speech patterns and disorganized forms of behavior are also observed in schizophrenia and are also categorized as psychotic symptoms (Hansell, 2004). While the
first four symptoms indicate the addition of some abnormal trait, the fifth symptom of schizophrenia is characterized as the absence of a typical trait: appropriate emotional reactions and investment (Hansell,
2004). In other words, a schizophrenic person is unlikely to demonstrate certain typically "human" functions such as emotional displays or empathy. Developmental disorders are those disorders which befall one
during childhood, either acquired through traumatic experiences or inherited congenitally, which disrupt or impede the normal development of personality. They are considered "axis 2" disorders by the DSM IV-TR, suggesting
their involvement in serving as a foundation for higher-level axis 1 disorders (Burke, 2011). They can be categorized either as specific or pervasive, with specific disorders involving a particular problem
or obstacle hindering development, and pervasive disorders describing those disorders which constitute a more broad set of symptoms (Burke, 2011). There are five primary classifications of schizophrenia and psychosis,
