In an effort to more fully understand how schizophrenia affects the ability of those people who have been diagnosed with the disease to store, retain and recall memories, several studies
have been conducted. The three studies here discussed are 1) Autobiographical Memory in Schizophrenia: An Examination of the Distribution of Memories, 2) Working Memory for Visual Features and Conjunctions
in Schizophrenia, and 3) Subjective Qualities of Memories Associated With the Picture Superiority Effect in Schizophrenia. OVERVIEW OF THE THREE STUDIES
The three studies chosen emphasized investigation in slightly different areas of memory retention and recall. The first study focused on the retention of memories based on the age
of the memory and the autobiographical nature of the memory. The second study to be discussed focused on the storage capacity of the brain. The concern was whether
or not the actual capacity of the brain to store information is affected by schizophrenia, and whether or not the ability of the schizophrenic patient to recall memories which may
have been stored in the brain is affected. Finally, the third study was concerned with the ability of the schizophrenic patient to recall both words and pictures after repeated
visual stimulus of the words and pictures. The studies were similar in that they each used a normal test group and a group of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. And although,
each was extensive in a particular area, the conclusion of each was that the cognitive functions of the brain which are associated with memory are most affected by the disease.
