more of a public issue, Scandinavian health systems serve as a source for possible solutions. However, examination of these systems shows that there are also problems involved with this type
of socialized medicine. Infant mortality rates, as well as the morality rates for women giving birth, are often used as an indication of the overall competency of a nations
health care system. A 2003 report issued by the Save the Children organization shows that the majority of Scandinavian countries are in the top "10 best countries to be
a mother" (Cowley 8). Sweden came in as number 1 for the lowest infant morality rate; Denmark was second; Norway, third; and Finland was fifth (Cowley 8). By way
of comparison, the United States was eleventh. In examining Scandinavian health care system, experts often look to Sweden because their health care system is very similar to that of
four other Nordic countries: Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland (Caltorp, et al 587). In each of these nations, the health care system is a central part of the societies.
The interplay of health issues with social policies is credited as being one of the reasons why the health indices in these countries are excellent (Caltorp, et al 587). In
all of these Nordic states, there is a strong commitment to equality of access and use in regards to health services. Nevertheless, despite its many strengths, the Swedish public became
