has been more than only an interesting experience. I have learned much about communicating with others as a result of this class, techniques and lessons that have been useful
for class, but also will be useful in the future. Lessons Learned Argument One of the most enduring lessons of debate class is
the true definition and meaning of the word "argument." That lesson has been demonstrated in several forms, not the least of which has been the need to defend a
position with which I do not personally agree. Building a solid argument for or against any position, on any topic, requires the ability to break down the problem or
situation into its individual components, followed by close examination of those components. Of course it is easy to argue the side of some
concept that matches personal opinion. Whether arguing in favor of extended library hours or against child labor, the acceptable reasons are many and the argument is logical. When
it is necessary to argue the side of an issue with which the individual personally disagrees, however, there is far less "fun" involved and the assignment becomes quite a distasteful
chore. It is these assignments that have held the greatest lessons, however. These assignments that superficially seem so negative are those that
require the greatest level of analysis and breaking down to the real issues. Agreeing or disagreeing with a concept that many people agree (or disagree) with is easy when
the topic is publicly popular. It is much more difficult to present solid arguments that run counter to popular opinion. Yet preparing
