Such is the concept of eminent domain, the ability of the local government to seize virtually anyones property provided enough elected officials and city planners agree to do so (Current Controversies, n.d.). The purpose here is to identify means of saving the old historic inn from demolition to make way for a modern shopping center. In the beginning it was believed that gaining inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places would provide the protection the inn needs. Research into the application process purpose of the national register reveals that inclusion provides only an honorable distinction, and no real protection at all (Max, 2005). Owners of the inn will need to pursue another route to save the inn from demolition in the short term, while beginning the application process for national recognition. National registry can influence local opinion but local government is not bound by any restriction regarding local decisions. The Historic Register The National Register of Historic Places is operated and maintained by the National Park Service portion of the Department of the Interior. The national register is a database of historic buildings, districts, landmarks and other entities whose histories have been well documented and which demonstrate historical significance. That significance does not need to be discrete, identifiable events. "Significance" can be established through the entitys place and involvement in the local society in which it is located.
