Depictions of violence in film are seldom as intense as those found in "Saving Private Ryan". This film tells the story of the World War II experience from a different perspective than most of the earlier films depicting the war. The scenario is a horrible one to imagine and one that is uncommon even in war. Never-the-less, the film is based on a true story. Three brothers have been killed in action and the military has the job of informing the mother. Thanks to the awareness of a simple clerk in some remote office in the military hierarchy, they realize there is a fourth brother in the war as well and decide to retrieve him and deliver him home unscathed. The goal is one that seems almost impossible. Those charged with this task must find one man in a battlefield that spans miles. They must escort this man to safety through enemy fire while men fall left and right around them. Spanning a six year period between September 1, 1939 (the date of Germanys invasion of Poland) and September 2, 1945 (the date of the Japanese surrender), World War II probably resulted in more long-term and far-reaching socio-political and socio-cultural consequences than any other war in history (Sulzberger, 1966). Amidst the destruction and horror, lives were lost and forever changed. Not only soldiers, but also civilians were affected by this great war.
