Elephant" is a straightforward account of an incident in which a sub-divisional police officer shot an elephant that had gone on a rampage. But the story has many layers to it, and evokes a definite time and place: Burma, at a time when it was still under British rule. George Orwell is the pen name of Eric Blair, who was born in Motihari, Bengal in 1903, where his father was a civil servant (Merriman). His mother took him to England when he was a year old, and he didnt see his father again until 1912, when he visited England for three months (Merriman). Blair had a younger sister, Avril and an older sister named Marjorie, and with characteristic humor described his family as "lower-upper-middle class" (Merriman). He attended the "Anglican parish school of Henley-on-Thames for two years" and then entered St. Cyprians School, located in Sussex (Merriman). Because corporal punishment was common at the time, he was undoubtedly beaten at school, and this was "possibly a source of his initial resentment towards authority" (Merriman). Blair wrote his first published poem at St. Cyprians; and from there he earned a scholarship to the "most costly and snobbish" of all English public schools, Eton, which he attended from 1917-1921 (Merriman). In 1922, Blair went to Burma, apparently following his fathers inspiration, and joined the Indian Imperial Police (Merriman). He remained in Burma for five years, and developed a great love and respect of the Burmese people at the same time he began to hate the oppressive British imperial system that oppressed them (Merriman).
