the dangerous one filmed in the futuristic film Escape from New York. Also, many communities around the nation have cleaned up their streets and formed initiatives to make life more
palatable. For instance, community organizations and business alliances have formed to make sure that the cities and towns they live in are never neglected. Business owners realize that forming alliances
helps not only residents but the business themselves. Businesses cannot attract new customers in crime ridden neighborhoods and crime also decreases property values. It is therefore in everyones interest to
form these alliances. While such plans work in small cities around America, another problem looms large. That is, urban sprawl has created many poor regions. The infrastructure of the cities
simply cannot handle the increased number of residents. These are the cities that cry out to be saved, even today. Generally speaking, large cities are doing well. Several new trends
demonstrate a drop in crime as well as balanced budgets (Koerner, Wright, Cue & Pritchard, 1998). However, reported in 1998, the middle class is slowly disappearing from cities and going
to the suburbs (1998). This trend is really nothing new but symptomatic of problems in the cities. While creating an American city in such a way that it is
a desirable place to live seems impossible, experts contend that urban life is here to stay (1998). Some trends seem to support that idea as cities provide the best nightlife,
is generally young and hip, and sport the best hospitals. People who like a lot of activity are attracted to cities as are people who are bored by the homogeneity
