theyre stranded on an island without adult supervision. This paper considers the ways in which Golding plays out his theme of good versus evil using the boys as symbols of
larger, abstract ideas. Discussion Good and evil are polar opposites, a duality, and Golding has constructed his novel to reflect that. Everything on the island has two sides to it;
the island itself has two sides. The boys will split into two groups; the novel is split into two sections; each person will reveal the truth behind the mask of
civilization, becoming in effect two people. The island, which seems like a paradise, will become hell. There has been a great deal of scholarship devoted to examining the psychological breakdown
of the boys, but not as much dealing with the religious symbolism, which is strong throughout the book. Well turn first to an article that explores the religious aspects of
Goldings work. The first thing that comes to mind is the fact that there is a Beast on the island, always referred to with the "B" capitalized. This indicates
that this is the Beast of the Bible, the creature designated by "666," and it makes its presence known in the second part of the story, after the symbolic expulsion
from the Garden of Eden. The novel is "structured in two parts, each beginning with an air battle followed by an exploration of the island" (van Vuuren, 2005, p. 1).
The first part of the novel is analogous to the Garden of Eden; the boys are on an island that is a paradise: its warm and lush, and beautiful. But
fear begins to grow among the children, starting with the "littluns" who, with the vivid imagination of young children, see monsters in the jungle and terrors lurking behind every tree.
