Von Huben 9/2010 Please Introduction Kate Chopin is a feminist writer; her book The Awakening is a brilliant study of a womans gradual realization of how stifling her life is, and what happens when she refuses to play the roles that society has assigned to her. The book is moving and frank in its portrayal of a womans deepest longings; its also so controversial it ruined Chopins career. But before she made her mark with the novel, she presented readers with a short story that had much the same theme: the way in which society forces women into playing only certain limited roles, which they often despise, and what happens when they try to break out of those "proper" molds. This paper argues that what kills Mrs. Mallard is not her grief over her husbands death, but her shock and disappointment at his survival. Discussion The story: Mrs. Mallard has a weak heart so her friends break the news of her husbands accidental death to her as gently as possible. Her reaction, which she cannot admit to anyone, is at bottom relief and a blooming joy that she will at last be free to be her own person (Chopin). When it turns out that the report of his demise was a mistake and he walks in, she has a heart attack and dies (Chopin).
