Furthermore, this relationship between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia is indeed a very important one, as it determines and influences a great deal of policy and even affects our conflicts in that region. Understanding the dynamics of this relationship is important because it sheds light on many Middle Eastern issues, as well as illuminating why specific policy exists as a result of this relationship. First, we all now know who Osama bin Laden is and his role in recent terrorist activities against the United States. Significantly, Saudi Arabia has a direct link to both Bin Laden and the United States. First of all, Bin Laden is a proponent of a fundamentalist form of Islam that is shared by two other Muslim states: one of which is Saudi Arabia (Pfaff, 2001). It is furthermore important to realize that Saudi Arabia is one of Americas most important allies in its war against terrorism (Pfaff, 2001). Clearly we can already see the conflict. Saudi Arabias government is an absolute monarchy, and the religious movement in charge is called the Wahhabi (Pfaff, 2001). The Wahhabi is the source of modern Islamic fundamentalism - in other words, the same ideals that Bin Laden holds dear (Pfaff, 2001). Pakistan is another example, and their military government is influenced b this same fundamentalism (Pfaff, 2001). It is important to realize that Bin Laden IS a Wahhabi, and he believes his religion has been betrayed.
