Most companies find sweeping economic changes challenging enough, without also having to deal with changing social values. Jarir Bookstore's position is that it already has begun addressing both. It will need to develop a clear strategy for itself for the future, one that will be beneficial for the company's financial future as well as be acceptable to Saudi society. The company occupies a position in which it is well known and highly respected, providing a forum for economic, technological and social commentary and change if the company chooses to pursue all of the opportunities available to it. Bookstore was founded in Saudi Arabia in 1974, and at that time was "only" a bookstore. It began carrying computer software after the advent of the personal computer in
the 1980s, and began offering computers to its customers in 1996. It now is the leading computer retailer in the country, one that also sells books and translates international
best-sellers into the Arabic language. With more than 700 employees across all divisions, Jarir Bookstore along with its parent company, Jarir Marketing, occupies an enviable position within the Saudi
economy. Just as technological advances have created opportunity for the company that its management has been able to use for immense benefit, social
change within Saudi Arabia has the potential of being just as defining for Jarir Bookstore as was the decision to sell personal computers nearly a decade ago.
The company leads its industry at present and has for some time. It also has plans for the future, including promoting wireless technology within Saudi
Arabia and throughout the Gulf region. As of 2003, Jarir Bookstore had not experienced the pressures of the downturn of the IT market that had materialized in other parts
of the world following the turn of the new century. It maintains a wholesale division serving government and corporate sales, and the Saudi governments plans to place computers in
all Saudi schools holds great promise for Jarir Bookstore. The company faces strategic issues for the future, however. The purpose here is to identify and discuss some of
