Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 16 page paper discussing General Motors' motivation for creating the
Saturn Division and the state of the market at the time of its creation. GM was in nothing short of
shock after sending a task force to Japan to learn that country's "secrets" of manufacturing in the
early 1980s. GM understood that it would be unable to overcome decades of the adversarial
relationship between labor and management in any attempts to duplicate conditions in the US; its
response was to create Saturn. The paper uses Harvard Case 9-795-010 as its primary source,
discussing conditions existing at and facing Saturn in 1994. Includes a diagram and discussion of
Porter's Value Chain. Bibliography lists 19 sources.
