Director Karl Reiszs "Saturday Night Sunday Morning" is based on the book of the same title by Alan Sillitoe. The film portrays
the life of young and reckless Arthur Seaton (played by Albert Finney). Seaton is a factory worker in Nottinghamshire who has a very definite chip on his shoulder.
He compensates for the day to day drudgery he is forced to endure as an assembly line worker by loosening up on Saturday nights in a neighborhood pub. During
the first part of the film Seaton proclaims: "All Im out for is a good
time....Everything else is propaganda" Seatons good time is a reflection of his need to supersede
the status quo world of his parents. Indeed, he is angry at the world and reflects that anger through his irresponsibility. "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning" is more
than just an angry young man film. Indeed, it provides us an insiders look at working class England in the 1960s. What it depicts is a picture of
class prejudice and strained gender relationships. Saturday Night Sunday Morning is made even more interesting by Reisz strategic use of cinematic
realism to deliver experience which mimics that of real life. The film can be classified as expressionistic as well, in that it is an expression of the artists feelings
