In the twentieth century, the majority of societal satirists have favored a far different medium, animation, as cartoonists have been able to circumvent the boundaries of political correctness practically since the invention of the medium, which is demonstrated by the fact that Popeye has been muttering outrageous comments under his breath for over a half century. One of the most influential cartoons, and one that is credited with initiating satire as a predominant television phenomenon, is the long-running series, The Simpsons, Americas quintessential dysfunctional family. The Simpsons are not, as yet, the longest running series on television, as Gunsmoke still holds that position, however, it is close and, arguably, it has been much more influential as it has been referred to as "the progenitor of a whole new era of pop culture" (Turner 50). During the "Golden Age" of the series, roughly from 1991 to 1997, each new episode of The Simpsons "practically leapt off the screen in a gleeful anarchic vortex of vicious satirical barbs, oddball pop references and razor-sharp egghead wit" (Turner 50). The show lampooned virtually everything, as no cultural icon, no celebrity or politician was considered off limits. The shows writers were actually "subversive," as they were, and still are, willing to "deflate our most over-inflated pieties" and delight in the "demolition of our most hallowed institutions" (Turner 50). As The Simpsons has never hesitated to step on toes and tip over sacred cows, it has been widely imitated. The Simpsons is the direct "godfather" of South Parks shock humor, as well as the progenitor of "The Family Guys light speed non-sequitur loops" (Turner 50).
