work that is complex and thoroughly detailed in almost every aspect one could consider. One of the characters who proves to be so incredibly detailed and intriguing is Satan. He
is not merely presented, and then dismissed, as simply an evil entity that it out to rule, but rather offered as a very important figure in the history of man,
both spiritually and physically. In the following paper we examine that reality, discussing Satans role in society, his role in relationship to other characters, and his personality. Satan
and Society As is very obvious in the first chapter of Miltons work, Satan is allowed to live so that he can provide the opposite of God. We all understand
that mankind is inherently good and bad. If only God were to exist then mankind would not be both, but be only good. Satan is necessary to provide that balance
which provides humans the choice to be good or bad. Satan is there to offer one side that applies to free will, a very important element in Miltons work. And,
where would free will be if society and mankind did not have the choice to commit evil deeds? If mankind had only to choose between good things there would be
no point in free will. Satan also serves as a tool for God in relationship to mankind. Through Satan God can test mankind, almost as though he were playing
a game. We note this when God is talking to his son in Book III. He tells his son that Satan will tempt man and man will fall. He is
already aware of the outcome of the situation, and the outcome. In this he is using Satan as the tool of confusion, evil, temptation, and deception that will keep mans
