Inferno we have what is apparently a first person narrative of Dantes own personal journey to find truth, a journey where one individual helps him through various levels of the underworld where evils exist. In Miltons story we have a fictional account, or an elaboration, of the story of Adam and Eve and the fall of man. The following paper first examines how Satan and Hell are portrayed in Dantes Inferno and then the same in regards to Miltons Paradise Lost. The paper finishes by comparing and contrasting the two. Inferno Dantes story is one that focuses primarily on all the evils in the world. It is a story that delves deep into things such as gluttony, greed, lust, and other sins of mankind. As such the notion or presentation of Satan and Hell are quite dark and controlling. In addition, we find that Hell is also a place that has many levels, or rings. All of these rings are filled with dark and frightening realities, such as burning tombs where heretics burn for eternity. There are places where people are showered with fire for eternity. As Dante reaches closer and closer to the real level of Hell he is shown many different levels where different types of sins and sinners are tortured for eternity. In all honesty, each level seems horrible with no descending level becoming any more frightening than the previous. When they finally come to Satan they see he has three faces. There is a black one, a yellow one and a red one. The mouths have bloody foam coming out and all six of the eyes of Satan are crying. He cries while he eats the bodies of three individuals who were considered criminals, Judas, Brutus, and Cassius. They had betrayed their lords, ...
