Bosworth, offers a considerable insight into how the ancient Sasanid civilization of Persia (modern day Iran) perceived kingship. Al-Tabaris text, as translated by Bosworth, suggests several features pertinent to this
topic. First of all, future rulers are marked from birth by portent, omens and prophecies that collectively indicate that they were chosen by God and destined to rule. Secondly, due
to this divine sanction, their use of violence is legitimate; and third, their subsequent rule is based upon having received divine sanction. Al-Tabari, in relating the births and childhood
of future rulers, includes divine portent and omens associated with rulers as a part of their biographies. For example, when Babak was born, his hair was "already over a span
long," which Bosworth explains in a footnote added a "legendary touch" to the account of the birth, as this features presaged "future strength and greatness" (Bosworth 5). When Babaks son
Ardashir was seven years old, his father arranged for him to be adopted by Tira, with the understanding that the boy would one day take over Tiras post as castellan
(Bosworth 6). This arrangement suggests a form of apprenticeship. Ardashir was informed by "group of astrologers and diviners" that he was born "under an auspicious star" and he was destined
to rule (Bosworth 7). One night, Ardashir dreamed that an angel was sitting by his bed and that the angel informed him that "God was going to give him rulership
