For our purposes in considering Sartre, lets consider existentialism using this definition: "A philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of the individual experience in a hostile or indifferent universe, regards human existence as unexplainable, and stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for the consequences of ones acts" (Existentialism, 2005). Sartre wrote, "I am creating a certain image of man of my own choosing. In choosing myself, I choose man" (Sartre, 2004). We want to consider this observation: It seems as if Sartre is trying to derive values from facts; but doesnt this stand in direct opposition to his view that we always choose values no matter what the facts? Discussion To answer that, lets consider Sartres writing in its entirety. He is writing, as he says, "to defend existentialism against some charges which have been brought against it" (Sartre, 2004). These charges include embracing a philosophy in which no action is possible, since no solution is possible; this in the end produces a "philosophy of contemplation" (Sartre, 2004). On the other hand, existentialists have also been accused of "dwelling on human degradation" to the exclusion of the better parts of human nature (Sartre, 2004). Christians accuse existentialists of "denying the reality and seriousness of human undertakings," saying that if they reject Gods commandments, then life itself becomes nothing but an exercise in capriciousness with everyone doing as he pleases and no one condemning anyone else (Sartre, 2004). It is to answer these charges that he writes the piece that ends with the quote about choice.
