an art that evolved over time, as the process of mummification underwent change. In essence, the history of the art of the sarcophagi is a very extensive history. With that
in mind the following paper examines some of that history and then offers a discussion of different sarcophagi. Basic Information Most of the records available indicate that "the
majority of sarcophagi were made of wood, but those that remain are of stone and terra-cotta, as evidenced in the early 6th-century examples (British Mus.) from Clazomenae. Many Greek and
Etruscan sarcophagi are in the shape of a couch; others, such as the sarcophagus of Alexander the Great, are carved and painted in imitation of temple architecture" (Encylopedia.com). Interestingly enough,
this clearly indicates that not all, and perhaps not even most, of the sarcophagi we imagine were in the shape of the human inside. We further note that "The
marble sarcophagi (excavated in 1877) from Sidon, a chief city of ancient Phoenicia, are among the finest examples of Greek art. In Rome sarcophagi became popular before the Punic Wars"
with the earliest known sarcophagus being "that of the consul Cneius Cornelius Scipio of the 3d cent. BC, now in the Vatican" in Rome (Encylopedia.com). It was under "the
rule of the emperors" that "Roman sarcophagi became elaborate, with mythological scenes carved on the sides and statues of the deceased on the lid. The early Christians also used sarcophagi
for their distinguished dead" (Encylopedia.com). This clearly indicates that sarcophagi were not only something of ancient Egypt, but something of more modern times. And, in light of this there is
