The idea of Saran wrap as an effective barrier is a useful metaphorical tool by Neil Ernst to describe the cultural barriers which are depicted by Anne Fadiman in her book "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall down". The book tells of the experiences felt by the Lees; a Hmong family and the treatment then their door to receive by the American medical community, and the struggles which take place between the family and the doctors, who both are seeking to act in the best interests of Lia, but are making their decisions based on very different cultural values and beliefs. The metaphor of the Saran wrap provides an effective way of depicting the way in which the American medical community and the Hmong family are able to see each other, but are unable to understand each other, as they are not able to experience that culture, there are only able to observe it from outside. Saran wrap is able to contain even the simplest of characteristics, such as the smell of the food; one can only appreciate the complexity and differences of food aromas once the barrier has been removed. Likewise, one may look at a culture, seeing only the outward manifestations, but without removing barriers it is impossible to create common experiences were even if values are not shared they can be fully comprehended.
