social work also had their beginnings in the eastern part of the United States, but today have spread to every corner not only of the United States but also around
the world. BACKGROUND OF THE NEED FOR SOCIAL ASSISTANCE The inner city world of the late 1800s and into the early 1900s was one of despair, poverty, and often times
hunger for many of the individuals who found themselves in the slums of the large cities. This time in history was a difficult time for anyone, let along a
woman who was trying to improve conditions for those around her and especially if that woman was an African American. Multiculturalism was a relevant and a significant factor in America
of that era. From 1880 to 1920, American experienced expediential growth when hundreds of immigrants from southern, central and Eastern Europe arrived each day (Meares, 1999). In addition,
many African Americans who had had their roots in the southern portion of the United States were now moving north. Due to the rapid influx of so many different cultures,
little was done to assimilate these different cultures and little was done to help the new city population to understand and deal with their values, beliefs and behavioral norms when
