Enterprises Inc. By - June, 2003 properly! Sappho is acknowledged to be the greatest female poet of Greek antiquity. However, little is known about her life. She lived in the early part of the sixth century BC on the island of Lesbos (from which derives the term for female homosexuality due Sapphos love of women). Plato referred to her as the "tenth muse." While ancient Greek sources refer to numerous books of her poetry, for the most part, only fragments of her poems have survived. The longest surviving fragment is a seven stanza poem in which Sappho asks Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, to aid her in her relationship with a beloved woman. Yet, with even this small sampling of her poetry, she continues to inspire new generations of poets with the sincerity and beauty of her verse. Fragment #92 exemplifies this point. It goes: "Do you remember/ How a golden / broom grows on/ the sea beaches." This fragment seems to insinuate the overall tone of the complete poem. First of all, the image that she creates of sea oats looking "golden" as they grow out of the sand, contrasted next to the sea, suggests a love of nature, as is evocative of natures beauty. Secondly, Sappho connected this image with memory, which suggests that she is picturing memory as intrinsic to human experience. This is a sensual, humanistic type of poetry that Elytis (1991) maintains was not usual for Sapphos time. During this period of Greek history, Elytis (1991) asserts that societys religious bases were austere and epic poetry reigned supreme, placing the heroic value at the apex of value.
