one man in pursuit of his own dreams. It is the story of one man. And, that one man is often seen as an individualist. But, it is also the
story of one mans ability to be a role model for another. Santiago is the man, and Manolin is the boy who would follow Santiago and learn from him. In
this respect we can see that while Santiago is clearly an individualist, seeking his own destiny and concerning himself with no one, he is also a man who serves as
a powerful influence for another. In the following paper we examine Santiago as an individualist and then Santiago as a mentor. In presenting this examination the paper illustrates that just
because Santiago is an individualist does not mean he cannot be a mentor as well. Santiago the Individualist When we first see Santiago we see that he is
one of many fishermen. He is alone in his pursuit of fish, just as the other fishermen are. There are those who help while learning, such as Manolin, but the
men, for the most part, are alone in their endeavors. Santiago has gone 84 days without catching a fish. He is considered bad luck at this point, a condition which
truly makes him an individual alone, for Manolin must leave him and work for another boat due to the bad luck. But, Santiago is determined. Now, interestingly enough, we have
our first taste of Santiago as an individualist just prior to his setting out to sea to catch a fish on he 85th day. We note that Manolin has been
required to move to another boat by his father, yet he still remains with Santiago for dinners. In their relationship we note that Santiago is not distressed that Manolin must
