evident in the writing of many contemporary writers, such as Sandra Cisneros. In her poignant short story, "Eleven," numerous features of modernism are evident. The following examination of
this narrative demonstrates its modernist roots. Modernist writing rejects "traditional values and assumptions" (Modernism). In "Eleven," Cisneros departs from the traditional perspective, first of all, by writing from the
point of view of a child, but also in her subject matter. The plot, what there is of it, concerns what traditional society -- that is, adult society --
would deem to be a trivial matter, yet Cisneros makes it clear that the matter is far from trivial to Rachel. In fact, her embarrassment in front of her
peers causes a sense of desolation and abandonment that is, in itself, another feature of modernism (Modernism). Rachel becomes upset when her teacher makes a point of subscribing ownership
of an atrocious red sweater to her. It was an "ugly sweater with red plastic buttons and a collar and sleeves all stretched out like you could use it for
a jump rope" (Cisneros 7). Socially adept to the ways of her peers, Rachel realizes that ownership of this sweater equates with being a social outcast. When another girl
suggests that it belongs to Rachel, the teacher, Mrs. Price pounces on this piece of knowledge and insists that Rachel accept the sweater. When she tries to protest to Mrs.
Price, language fails her and she becomes tongue-tied. It makes Rachel wish that she were "one hundred and two," so that she would have known "what to say when Mrs.
Price put the red sweater on my desk" (Cisneros 7). This element of the story is also a feature of modernism in that a characteristic element of this literary trend
