paper discusses the theme of the book and gives a reaction to it. Discussion Sanborns purpose in writing the book is to suggest to the reader that the best way
to have a passionate, extraordinary life is to "go the extra mile," and offer service that isnt necessarily expected. Not only does putting extra effort into something please and surprise
the people who are on the receiving end of such behavior, it does good for the person who performs these acts. The model for this behavior is Fred, the postman.
Or rather, he is the first "Fred" that the author meets. Its interesting that its a postman who impressed Sanborn, since most post office employees are usually thought of either
as lazy, incompetent, or about to "go postal"-referring to the stress of the job. But this Fred is truly someone special, and he gives his name to all the Freds
who come after him. Sanborn meets Fred for the first time when the latter comes to his door to introduce himself, saying "My name is Fred, and Im your postal
carrier. I just stopped by to introduce myself -- to welcome you to the neighborhood and find out a little bit about you and what you do for a living"
(Sanborn, 2004). Fred has no ulterior motive in doing this, which helps illustrate one of the points of the book, which is that Freds do nice things because its the
right thing to do, not because they expect a reward. Fred simply wanted to welcome Sanborn to the neighborhood and make him feel comfortable there. The next thing that happens
