term "samurai" literally means "those who serve." It cam into use towards the end of the 8th Century A.D. when the Japanese warrior fighting in the Honshu began to fit
the historical model of a classical Japanese warrior. By this time, the Japanese government had become dependent on the fighting men of the Kanto to the point that courtiers no
longer took up arms and fought the battles themselves. This job was left to the group who came to be known and respected as the Samurai (Lay 1). The Samurai
has its origins in the ancient traditions of the country dating back to 200 AD (Schauweckers 1). As individuals began to own
and cultivate land more, wars and battles broke out between the owners of land and those trying to steal the land from them. Since so many citizens had given up
hunting in favor of farming, many no longer had the skills of the warrior, thus a group of men suited to the pursuit of battle specialized in this occupation. Arrows
and swords were the weapons of choice. These warriors were called upon to fight the nations wars with other nations and soon gained a position of importance (Lay 3). Continuous
and strenuous training was required of these men with most of the training occurring on the Kanto plain which was also the most ideal location for raising horses, thus they
came to be known as Kanto warriors, the fiercest of all Japanese warriors (Lay 4). The Samurai were members of the most powerful
and revered military class whose influence and importance grew rapidly during the Heian Period from approximately 794 0 1185. It was during this time that wealthy and powerful landowners hired
