the city of Victoria and he is and was considered to be one of the most diverse architects of his time. As one author notes, "Maclure is known primarily for
his residential architecture, with relatively few commercial designs" (The Art and Architecture of Samuel Maclure, 2005). His work was generally designed with the client in mind. His works ranged from
the bungalow to Arts and Crafts style to the Chalet and Tudor. The following paper focuses on his bungalow style. Samuel Maclure: Bungalow Design Samuel Maclure was
born in New Westminster in 1860 and showed early promise as an artist (Heritage BC, 2005). He was encouraged by his parents and there was even the possibility that he
would go to Germany to study (Heritage BC, 2005). Due to finances he remained in Canada and through studies became interested in architecture (Heritage BC, 2005). "He was basically
a self-taught architect, he read books to learn what he needed to know about the business. Although his early architectural activities are sketchy, his move to Victoria in 1892 marks
the beginning of the most successful years of his career" (Heritage BC, 2005). And, it was his early years that brought forth his bungalow style.
He opened architectural offices with other architects and his earliest buildings in Victoria were "one-storey, framed in wood and featuring shingles on the exterior" (Heritage BC, 2005).
This was his bungalow style which would give way to other styles. This bungalow style was comprised of incredibly sturdy little houses which consisted of one story, as noted, and
covered with shingles. They were wood-framed. "These houses were practical, handsome and inexpensive (Eaton, pg. 3)" (The Arts and Crafts Movement, 2005).
