First, there really is an A&P; it stands for the "Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company," and it is (or was) a nationwide grocery store chain. This particular A&P is located near Boston, and as the story begins, Sammy has just been blindsided by three girls who came into the store wearing nothing but their bathing suits (Updike). His immaturity is apparent in his reaction to them: his descriptions are crude and overtly sexual; he refers to one of the girls having a "sweet broad soft-looking can" (Updike). He describes the physical appearance of the girls in great detail, and hes so preoccupied with them he cant remember whether he rang up a purchase or not (Updike). His reaction, his sexual interest, his crude summing up of the girls appearance-all of these speak to his immaturity. He makes jokes and pretends to faint ("Darling," I said. "Hold me tight") when he sees an attractive girl (Updike). His fellow cashier is named "Stoksie"; hes 22, with "two babies chalked up on his fuselage already, but as far as I can tell thats the only difference" (Updike). The difference, that is, between Stoksies behavior before and after marriage. Sammy says that hes 19 and implies that he too is a man like Stoksie, but the reference to Stoksies children again reveals his immaturity. Referring to the babies in the same way that air crews chalked up kills on their planes makes them into something of a joke, and implies that Stoksie went on a "mission" every time he made love to his wife. The imagery is unsophisticated and is reminiscent of his adolescent "drooling" over the girls bodies when they first came in.
