The question of whether same-sex marriages should be accorded the same rights and privileges as traditional marriages is an issue which has,
over the past years, occupied the attention of policy makers, social workers and gay rights movements in a number of countries including Canada. Traditional marriages in civil law have been
primarily based on the Christian definition of marriage, which states that it is a union between two people for the procreation of children. The legislature of Western nations has therefore
tended to take this as a basis for policy, and has excluded same-sex couples as well as those couples who live together in common-law partnerships. Since marriage is defined as
being primarily procreative, there is also a distinction made between marriages which cannot be consummated or which are sterile, which do not conform to the traditional definition of the term.
There are a number of
social and economic issues which relate to the institution of marriage, in addition to the discrimination which is felt by gay couples who cannot enter into same kind of binding
