same-sex marriages should not be allowed and they generally base their argument on the fact that such would threaten the institution of family and marriage. The following paper argues that same-sex marriages should be legal. Same-Sex Marriages As mentioned, most people who argue against same-sex marriages simply believe them to be wrong and that they threaten the institution of family and marriage in the nation. They generally, whether or not they truly believe, base their arguments on religious beliefs. One author indicates the following, which is perhaps the biggest aspect of the argument against same-sex marriage in society: "Marriage is defined by the God of nature and natures God...Marriage is the way our culture promotes monogamy, provides a way for males and females to build a life together, and assures every child has a mother and father" (Stanton). This sort of perspective is even seen in the words of the President of the United States who argued that, "The union of a man and a woman is the most enduring human institution, honored and encouraged in all cultures and by every religious faith" (CNN.com). One of the problems with this argument is that marriage is not really just about having children in our society. While many religious people and cultures claim that marriage is about creating a committed union for the sake of creating children, many people today get married and never have children. Perhaps they cannot have children, or they choose to not have children. This puts marriage into a completely different realm than most like to accept. Marriage is not just about procreating and having children and protecting those children.
