Gender and sexuality play an enormous role in the social
construct of cultural norms. This 5 page paper argues that homosexual

actively shape and change the gender structure. Deviance is in the eye of the beholder, as well as the social acceptability of individual behavior. Many, such as Lisa
Schiffren, believe that same sex marriages should not be allowed because of the deviant nature of the participants. Gay marriages are entered into for the same reasons as heterosexual
marriages: to provide a legal forum and recognition of a commitment made between two individuals. The fact that deviance is defined as being outside the cultural norms means
that there is already a shared understanding of what constitutes deviance. The ideas surrounding what constitutes deviancy and how it should be approached have changed dramatically in the past
fifty years. The emphasis is now more on the individual and how they can function within society rather than conforming to a standard behavior or ideal. Everyone has
some characteristic that is not entirely within the parameters of the norm (if indeed this could be identified). For the homosexual, it is a matter of sexual preference and,
for this reason, a matter of personal rather than social concern. Choice is the cornerstone of a number of philosophical, religious and psychosocial theories or ways of viewing
the world. Whether an individual believes in free agency the right to personal decisions (privacy) or a system of behavior and consequences, the key factor is choice. Society
as a whole does not always agree. There are many people who think that the invariance principle (where choice is not based on presentation or structure but, rather, on
the basis of consistency in outcome) is applicable to social interactions and that anything outside of the norm is strictly deviant. This is true within the realm of same
