The issue of same-sex marriage creates debate even in secular circles; it certainly creates concern for the Catholic Church. The Church always has condemned homosexuality as a sin; it
has no choice but to oppose same-sex marriage as well. This creates a bevy of problems for the Church. Certainly, it would
be easier for the Church to adopt a humanistic approach to the issue in which it would leave to individuals to act according to their own convictions. It is
not possible for the Church to take that stance, however. Presently, the Church takes no direct action against homosexuals. Indeed, it condemns
discrimination of gay and lesbian people. Nevertheless, it is unyielding in its position and finds itself running afoul of changing political views in several of the worlds developed nations.
The Churchs Position In 2003, Americas Roman Catholic bishops produced a statement encouraging states governments to withstand pressures to approve same-sex marriages.
The bishops were careful to note that they did not support any discrimination against homosexuals and it was not their intent to offend anyone. Even so, "the church leaders
said they had an obligation to give witness to the whole moral truth and reinforce Catholic teaching that gay sex is a sin" (Bishops Condemn Same-Sex Marriages).
The primary reason that the bishops took such a public and political stand against the issue is that offered by Bishop J. Kevin Boland of the
