upon sound reasoning, in order that individuals in our society have their best interest served. The fundamental message underlying the argument
against same-sex marriage is that of religious beliefs (Blitzer, 2004). President Bush himself has succinctly encapsulated this argument when he stated:
I strongly believe that marriage should be defined as between a man and a woman and Im troubled by activist judges who are defining marriage. I have watched carefully
whats happened in San Francisco, where licenses were being issued, even though the law states otherwise. I have consistently stated that if -- support law to protect marriage between a
man and a woman. And obviously these events are influencing my decision (Blitzer, 2004). Same-sex marriage is indeed a difficult issue
to address in our society given the long-standing tradition of heterosexual marriage (Blitzer, 2004). So many factors have presented themselves within the past fifty years to erode the institution
of marriage and those who are against same-sex marriages argue that this issue will only serve to erode the institution even further (Blitzer, 2004).
And yet, there are important benefits for legalizing same-sex marriage as well. The divorce rate in this country is already nearing 60% without same-sex marriages, and
