This data appears to support the concept that single-sex classrooms are beneficial to achieving academic goals because they allow teachers to use different pedagogical methods that are specifically designed to meet the needs of each sex. The following examination of literature explores this idea. First of all, it should be noted that there is considerable controversy over the trend toward instigating same-sex classrooms, as some sources uphold it as forward-thinking and justified by the superior performances demonstrated by children in the few same-sex classrooms that currently exist in the US, while others argue that the "facts" cited by proponents of same-sex education constitute pseudo-science that offers old stereotypes masquerading as scientific fact. This is the position taken by Martin and Schwartzmann who state that the following facts have been taught in "pseudo-scientific workshops": When establishing authority, teachers should not smile at boys because theyre biologically programmed to read this as a sign of weakness; they should only look boys in the eyes when disciplining them; girls should not have time limits on tests or be put under stress because unlike boys, girls brains cannot function well under these conditions; and girls dont understand mathematical theory very well except for a few days a month when their estrogen is surging (Martin and Schwartzmann, 2006, p. 10a).
