give the reader a deep insight into a mans soul. The pieces are sometimes hysterically funny but more often sad, because they are so true to life. The tone
of the book is set by the very first essay, which is only three pages long. Entitled "The Self-Made Man," it is a close observation of a man who has
begun to despair, who thought of himself as someone special but realizes he is not (Shepard, 1997). Shepard doesnt use names in the story, he simply discusses a man, "he";
as in "He had pictures of them on his stone mantel" (Shepard, 1997, p. 4). It could be Shepard himself, or his father with whom he had a troubled relationship;
it could be a work of fiction entirely. But what "he" realizes, as he stands on his porch in the dark, is that he is alone: "There was no one.
Just his breath. Blood pumping. He was about to speak, but Who to? he thought. Speak what? On whose behalf?" (Shepard, 1997, p. 6). When "he" realizes just how solitary
he is, he panics, because he suddenly senses there is nothing between him and the night (Shepard, 1997). The only thing that he could think of was his own breath,
and then "Peace, he thought, and as quickly as the thought shaped itself, peace left him" (Shepard, 1997, p. 6). That is the end of this story. In three
pages, Shepard has captured the terror that overtakes so many people when they find themselves alone. We dont know if the man is married, single, divorced or widowed; why he
is alone; where his friends may be. All we know is that he had considered himself a "self-made man," but suddenly feels that identity fall away (Shepard, 1997). Shepard considers
