the choices that were made. The main character is a man who lays dying from gangrene and throughout the story he examines what he has done wrong in his life
and how he feels his life has perhaps been somehow wasted. He feels he did not use his talent to the fullest, and in many ways blames others for his
lack of trying. The following paper argues that by the end of the story the main character has not found spiritual salvation in death, though he may have found a
way of accepting it. Spiritual Salvation In the beginning of the story we see the man and his woman discussing his condition and he talks as though he
has accepted his fate, telling her, "The marvelous thing is that its painless...Thats how you know when it starts" (Hemingway). She accepts his statement without emotion and he continues to
talk about his condition in a very abstract way until he becomes irritated with the farce of this conversation, instigating arguments, and yet telling her, "Cant you let a man
die as comfortably as he can without calling him names? Whats the use of clanging me?" as though the direction of the conversation is her fault (Hemingway). He tells
her that he likes arguing for it makes the time go faster, but then he berates her for who she is and how she is attempting to make him as
comfortable as possible. He calls her a "bloody fool" for thinking she knows anything about his condition or what he wants or what is good for him (Hemingway). And then
he begins to tell her that he never really loved her, often making references to her money. In these respects we begin to see how this man is examining
