given insight into the persona of a narrator. Such is the case with "Salvation" by Langston Hughes. In "Salvation" we are given the persona of a young man who is
on the verge of manhood. He is leaving childhood innocence and seeing the world for perhaps, what it really is: not a wonderful magical world, but a world of often
harsh realities. In "Salvation" the young man takes his first step into the depths of his own reality which may well provide him much of his basis for life thereafter.
Salvation We understand, from the beginning, that the narrator, Langston Hughes, is a young man of 12 years old. He clearly states this in the following: "I was saved
from sin when I was going on thirteen." This statement, other than informing us he was twelve, also informs us that something significant happened to him during this year of
his young manhood. It is a sentence that is simple, to the point, yet somewhat enticing in that we, the reader are not sure exactly what he means, though we
can assume it has something to do with religion. It is a simple sentence that we shall come back to further illustrate how Hughes experienced an event that, as mentioned,
would enable him to take his first steps into manhood through the depths of his own reality. Through simple lines, not overly long, we discover that Hughes is out to
be saved by Jesus Christ. We understand the possible excitement and the hope in this endeavor through such as exclamation points, to be sure. For example, in the second paragraph
the first three sentences end in exclamation points: "My aunt told me that when you were saved you saw a light, and something happened to you inside! And Jesus came
