following examination of Dalis art will focus on a work that is arguably Dalis most well known painting, "The Persistence of Memory." Dali was born on May 11, 1904,
which was nine months and ten days after the death of an older brother who died at when he was just 21 months old. The dead brother was also named
Salvador and Dalis parents made it clear that they regarded him as the reincarnation of their first child. Constantly compared to his first brother and found lacking, Dali grew up
preoccupied with making himself stand out and unforgettable (Harmon 107). He exhibited an early talent for drawing and, in 1921 at the age of 17, he traveled to Madrid in
order to study at the Royal Academy Special School of Painting (Harmon 108). In 1928, he arrived in Paris where he encountered the Surrealist movement, which he embraced wholeheartedly (Harmon
108). Analysis of Dalis Surrealist work indicates that he suffered from the trauma of his childhood well into the 1930s (Greeley 466). Description/Analysis Dalis Surrealist paintings are considered to be
his best work (Meisler). "The Persistence of Memory" was painted in 1931 and is oil on canvas, measuring 9 1/2 inches x 13 inches (MoMA). The principal images in "The
Persistence of Memory" are three watches that have apparently melted, and here is also a fourth watch that is covered with a swarming ants. The watches are in the foreground
