let her take us where she wants us to go, things become clearer. By that I mean that we begin to realize that the sense of unreality and confusion
that we may feel when we read the book actually stands for something much larger: the feeling of loneliness and alienation that often marks the immigrant experience. That
is, the novel itself is a metaphor for these feelings. This paper discusses the novel in relation to Hiromi Gotos observation about childhood, and the memory of childhood,
which deceives us into thinking things were better (or worse) than they really were. Together, the upwelling of memory and the odd themes make this a memorable work.
Childhoods Never-ending Influence This paper takes a quote from Hiromi Goto as its starting point. Goto, a Japanese-Canadian writer who is the author of the book The Kappa Child,
says "Ive always hoped that childhood could be a book, a sequence of pages that I could flip through, or close. A book that could be put away on a
